Drunk driving death statistics in Maryland

Any person in Maryland who has been involved in an accident caused by a drunk driver knows how traumatic these experiences can be. When a loved one's life is taken due to the negligent decisions of an impaired driver, the challenges mount further. Despite widespread public awareness that driving after consuming alcohol is dangerous, too many people continue to do just this.

A new report from SafeWise reviews traffic fatality data to get a picture of how each state is doing in the fight against drunk driving. The Baltimore Sun reports that the report reviewed the number of people killed in drunk driving accidents across the nation and while certainly even one death is one death too many, Maryland fared better than most other states.

It was found based on statistics from 2016 that in Maryland, 2.59 people out of every 100,000 died at the hands of drunk drivers. Only seven states had better results than Maryland. In looking at nearby states to Maryland, a wide range of results is seen. New York had the best result of all 50 states with 1.65 deaths per 100,000 people and New Jersey was similar with 1.97. In Rhode Island, the number was 2.08.

In contrast, 4.51 people out of every 100,000 in Delaware were killed by drunk drivers and another 4.37 died in West Virginia. in 2016, Maryland enacted a requirement that all persons convicted of impaired driving offenses install and use ignition interlock devices. These IIDs are intended to prevent repeat offenses by requiring breath samples prior to letting a person start a vehicle ignition.
