Road construction can be both a blessing and a bane. It is necessary to keep the roads in good condition and to correct hazards that could lead to accidents or vehicle damage. At the same time, construction can contribute to hazardous conditions that can lead to accidents with the potential to injure drivers, passengers, and pedestrians, as well as construction workers themselves. Road construction played a part in a disastrous multi-vehicle accident that injured at least six people on Interstate 70 in Washington County, Maryland, late last Friday morning.
At the time of the accident, a construction crew was at work repairing potholes in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70. Traffic within those lanes slowed considerably as a result. Allegedly, the driver of an empty Metro bus crashed into parked vehicles after failing to stop in time. Authorities continue to investigate the accident.
There have been no reports of fatalities, but six people allegedly sustained injuries as a result of the accident. Five of them traveled via ambulance to a nearby hospital. The sixth, an 18-year-old man from Martinsburg, Maryland, required a helicopter to transport him to a trauma center in Baltimore. His current condition is unknown, as are the conditions of the other injured parties. The aftermath of the accident closed down both sides of the interstate for a time, although the westbound lanes reportedly opened before the eastbound lanes where the accident took place.
