Improper care can lead to medical malpractice

The anticipated birth of a child can be one of the most joyous times in a person's life. The hope is always that a child will be born healthy and expectant mothers trust their doctors to provide care that gives the best chance of a healthy outcome for both mother and child in Maryland. A medical malpractice case in a neighboring state alleged that doctors did not adequately perform to that expectation.

A woman entered a military hospital in labor. She apparently had no cause to believe that her delivery would be anything but normal. Yet her child was born with a severe brain injury. He suffers from cerebral palsy and other neurological deficits. The parents brought a medical malpractice claim against the hospital and the doctors.

The lawsuit alleged that the doctors did not provide the expectant mother with sufficient information regarding her delivery options. The suit also alleged that the hospital and medical staff failed to adequately monitor the condition of the mother or the fetus during labor. The judge in the case awarded the family a $15 million judgment.

Doctors attend medical school and spend many years preparing to become practicing physicians. The general public puts their faith and trust in doctors to do their best to deliver a positive outcome. Doctors are human and no one is perfect. But when neglect or improper care contributes to a permanent injury a medical malpractice lawsuit may be an option in Maryland. No one can undo the harm done, but a successfully litigated claim can provide compensation for present and future medical costs.
