Medical malpractice may have serious or fatal outcomes

Medical mistakes lead to over 250,000 deaths each year across the United States, including Maryland. And unfortunately, even if patients survive medical malpractice, they may end up suffering life-altering and debilitating conditions. Unfortunately, these conditions can last a lifetime and negatively impact a person's quality of life.

Examples of medical malpractice include a surgery error, medication error or anesthesia error. In addition, a childbirth injury that could have been prevented is considered to be the result of medical malpractice. A delayed diagnosis or a misdiagnosis is also an example of malpractice.

When a doctor is negligent, this may cause a patient to suffer physical pain or mental anguish. In addition, the patient may end up incurring hefty medical bills that would not have accumulated had the doctor been more careful. In addition, in serious situations, a medical malpractice incident may cause the impacted patient to lose wages or even lose his or her earning capacity.

Doctors in Maryland and elsewhere have a duty to exercise reasonable care when evaluating or treating patients. Fortunately, if they fail to do this, the patients whom they harm have the right to file medical malpractice claims against them. Likewise, the surviving loved ones of patients who die at the hands of negligent doctors may file claims, seeking the reimbursement of monetary damages. No amount of money can undo the events leading to an injury or death as a result of medical malpractice. However, it may help the injured victim or the surviving loved ones of a deceased victim to more easily move forward from such an ordeal.
